History of Greensboro

Greensboro was formally established in 1808 as the county seat of Guilford County because it was at the exact geographical center. In reality, the site had drawbacks due to its location in a low area covered by water that also hosted ducks swimming where the city should be constructed. The early years of Greensboro were a time of great transition. Four transformations had a significant impact on the city's future.

In 1828, Henry Humphreys, the wealthiest resident, established the first steam-powered cotton mill in North Carolina north of the courthouse square. By 1833, seventy-five looms were in operation, and cotton cloth was exported to neighboring counties and states. Textile production quickly established itself as Greensboro's leading industry.

The name Greensboro reflects the city's notable history in the textile industry. The name stems from General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the Revolutionary War who was stationed in Greensboro during the establishment of military encampments with his troops nearby.

Growth and progress were steady throughout the nineteenth century, as Greensboro respected its past even as it looked eagerly to the future. By 1860, Greensboro was a major manufacturing center and North Carolina's largest town with nearly 2,600 people (4% of Guilford County's population).

Today, Greensboro is known for its universities, parks, performing arts center, centrally-located train station, public transportation network based on buses and light rail, theaters for live performances, large corporations, and historic architecture. Greensboro has a strong and diverse economy, with professional and technical jobs making up the largest share of employment.
