History of High Point

The first European settlers arrived in High Point in 1750 and consisted mainly of ethnic British colonists, many of whom were English Quakers; the city was established as the "highest point" of the North Carolina Railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte.

The central Piedmont region had few inhabitants due to its rocky soil, although several small towns in the area combined to create Guilford County, from which High Point would later split. In 1859, the city was incorporated to centralize industries in the region, attracting many German immigrants.

Since the late 1800s, it has been a major furniture manufacturing center; around 85% of U.S. furniture, approximately 65%, is made in North Carolina, and 40% of these products come from High Point alone.

The High Point Market Authority coordinates the city's furniture week twice annually. The event features dozens of international interior design vendors and manufacturers, showcasing both traditional popular styles as well as new products. According to Forbes magazine, the High Point Market has the world's largest furniture trade show, with billions of wholesale prices of exhibits each year.
