Winston-Salem is a city in North Carolina's Piedmont region, known for its textile history. With a population of 244,115 people in 2019, Winston-Salem is the fifth-largest city in the state. As one of the three major cities that compose this region, Winston-Salem is a part of many different counties, including Forsyth County. The Piedmont Triad metropolitan area is formed by High Point and Greensboro, with Winston-Salem as the third major city. Winston-Salem is home to the region's tallest office building, 100 North Main Street, formerly known as the Wachovia Building and locally known as the Wells Fargo Center.

Winston-Salem is referred to as "Twin City" for its cultural background and "Camel City" for its iconic tobacco history and association with the locally-based R. J. The History of Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem is unique, with its own stories of many moments in time. There's a lot to learn about Winston-Salem and the people who have lived here before us!

In January 1753, Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg chose a settlement site in the three forks of Muddy Creek for the new congregation on behalf of the Moravian Church. This is where the origin of the City of Winston-Salem begins. Today, the city is home to more than 250 different churches.

The residents of Salem sold part of the city's land to Forsyth County in 1849, allowing the county to build and establish a county seat. This area was transformed into Winston, a town named Joseph Winston, a well-known Revolutionary War hero. In 1913, the towns of Winston and Salem joined to form the city known as Winston-Salem. Hence, the nickname "Twin City" was created. There are a lot of interesting facts about these two towns on their own. Their merging just made it more fascinating. Winston-Salem is also known as "Camel City" for its famous history with the locally-produced R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which has used the Camel brand of cigarettes since 1913.

In addition to being home to a strong textile industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, Winston-Salem is also known for its local furniture, food, and tobacco companies. Everyone can remember the Camel brand of cigarettes made in Winston-Salem for over a century now!
